and connection to school .

TIP #1: Create Predictable Routines That Support Success

Consistent routines for sleep, homework, and mornings help kids feel secure and prepared. When children know what to expect, stress is reduced and they are better able to focus, learn, and connect at school.

TIP #2: Encourage Positive Peer Involvement

Help your child get involved in activities that match their interests, such as clubs, sports, music, or service. Positive peer connections increase a sense of belonging and reduce the likelihood of isolation, which can increase risk.

TIP #3: Focus on Strengths, Growth, and Effort
Celebrate effort, improvement, and resilience—not just grades or outcomes. When young people feel valued and capable, they build confidence and skills that protect against substance use and other risky behaviors.

TIP #4: Show Your Love of Learning

Help students feel familial support for learning. Make a point to read while they read. Write in a journal while they write an essay. Share stories of how school has impacted your life.

TIP #5: Start Conversations That Build Connection

Talking regularly about school shows kids they matter. Ask open-ended questions --share with me something new you learned today or something fun that happened today -- and really listen to their answers. When young people feel heard and supported at home, they are more likely to stay engaged and connected at school—an important protective factor against risky behaviors.
